Francesca Versace was the mother of the famous Versace children: Gianni, Donatella and Santo. Mother Francesca worked hard as a dressmaker to feed her family. Gianni watched closely how his mother made clothing. He himself, at the age of 10, designed his first dress.
In the seventies, Gianni went to Milan to pursuit his life as a designer. His younger sister Donatella was his muse. So when he started in 1978 his own fashion company, Gianni Versace S.p.A., Donatella moved to Milan to be with her brother, and she began to help with clothing design as well.
In 1989 Versus was launched as the diffusion line of Versace’s luxury fashion house. Gianni Versace noticed about this fashion line: “Versus was born with an innate creative approach, with a strong focus on innovation, flair and the unconventional. An artistic force that takes present fashion forward, anticipating new trends and embracing challenge.”
More important and very generous: Versus was a gift by Gianni to his sister Donatella.
After closing Versus in 2005, Donatella resurrected it in 2009 with a capsule collection of accessories designed by emerging British designer Christopher Kane. The brand now comprises watches, leather accessories and ready-to-wear.
Today Versus is known as Versace’s second line and as a brand.
